G.R.O.W. Coaching Model

The GROW Model

A Simple Process for Coaching and Mentoring

About the Model

GROW stands for:
  • Goal.
  • Current Reality.
  • Options (or Obstacles).
  • Will (or Way Forward).

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

How to Use the Tool
To structure a coaching or mentoring session using the GROW Model, take the following steps:

1. Establish the Goal

First, you and your team member need to look at the behavior that you want to change, and then structure this change as a goal that she wants to achieve.
Make sure that this is a SMART goal: one that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound.
When doing this, it's useful to ask questions like:
  • How will you know that your team member has achieved this goal? How will you know that the problem or issue is solved?
  • Does this goal fit with her overall career objectives? And does it fit with the team's objectives?

2. Examine the Current Reality

Next, ask your team member to describe his current reality.
This is an important step: Too often, people try to solve a problem or reach a goal without fully considering their starting point, and often they're missing some information that they need in order to reach their goal effectively.
As your team member tells you about his current reality, the solution may start to emerge.
Useful coaching questions in this step include the following:
  • What is happening now (what, who, when, and how often)? What is the effect or result of this?
  • Have you already taken any steps towards your goal?
  • Does this goal conflict with any other goals or objectives?

3. Explore the Options

Once you and your team member have explored the current reality, it's time to determine what is possible – meaning all of the possible options for reaching her objective.
Help your team member brainstorm as many good options as possible. Then, discuss these and help her decide on the best ones.
By all means, offer your own suggestions in this step. But let your team member offer suggestions first, and let her do most of the talking. It's important to guide her in the right direction, without actually making decisions for her.
Typical questions that you can use to explore options are as follows:
  • What else could you do?
  • What if this or that constraint were removed? Would that change things?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option?
  • What factors or considerations will you use to weigh the options?
  • What do you need to stop doing in order to achieve this goal?
  • What obstacles stand in your way?

4. Establish the Will

By examining the current reality and exploring the options, your team member will now have a good idea of how he can achieve his goal.
That's great – but in itself, this may not be enough. The final step is to get your team member to commit to specific actions in order to move forward towards his goal. In doing this, you will help him establish his will and boost his motivation.
Useful questions to ask here include:
  • So, what will you do now, and when? What else will you do?
  • What could stop you moving forward? How will you overcome this?
  • How can you keep yourself motivated?
  • When do you need to review progress? Daily, weekly, monthly?
Finally, decide on a date when you'll both review his progress. This will provide some accountability, and allow him to change his approach if the original plan isn't working.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

So after actually use this GROW model, I notice that the result have more impact because previously we're just asking random question and not directing anywhere thus making the session not productive. If you are using this model the first my advice is try not to be nervous or feeling awkward because you will send the vibe to your coachee thus making the session so uncomfortable for both of you.

Rise from the ashes like a Phoenix

Well I suppose to revive this blog last year, but I got caught up with a certain drama, that make my life so miserable that it felt so overwhelming I just want to give up.
Well the thing that used to be my problem now is my strength.
I believe it happen to all of us
so now if anything happen to me, I'm just well I will handle this just like last time
So here a song for us to enjoy.

GLEE CAST LYRICS

"Here's To Us"
[Rachel:]
We could just go home right now
Or maybe we could stick around
For just one more drink, oh yeah
Get another bottle out
Lets shoot the breeze
Sit back down
For just one more drink, oh yeah

Here's to us
Here's to love
All the times
That we messed up
Here's to you
Fill the glass
Cause the last few days
Have gone too fast
So let give em hell
Wish everybody well
Here's to us
Here's to us

Stuck it out this far together
Put our dreams through the shredder
Let's toast cause things got better
And everything could change like that
And all these years go by so fast
But nothing lasts forever

[Rachel with New Directions:]
Here's to us
Here's to love
All the times
That we messed up
Here's to you
Fill the glass

[Rachel:]
Cause the last few nights
Have gone to fast

[Rachel with New Directions:]
If they give you hell
Tell em to forget themselves
Here's to us
Here's to us

[Rachel:]
Here's to all that we kissed
And to all that we missed
To the biggest mistakes
That we just wouldn't trade

[Rachel with New Directions:]
To us breaking up
Without us breaking down
To whatever's come our way

[Rachel:]
Here's to us
Here's to us!

[New Directions:]
Here's to us
Here's to love
All the times
That we messed up

[Rachel with New Directions:]
Here's to you
Fill the glass

[Rachel:]
Cause the last few days
Have gone too fast

[Rachel with New Directions:]
So let's give em hell
Wish everybody well

[Rachel:]
Well!

[New Directions:]
Here's to us
Here's to love

[Rachel with New Directions:]
All the times
That we messed up
Here's to you
Fill the glass
Cause the last few nights
Have gone too fast
If they give you hell
Tell em forget themselves

[Rachel:]
Here's to us

[New Directions:]
Here's to us

[Rachel:]
Oh here's to us

[New Directions:]
Here's to us

[Rachel with New Directions:]
Here's to us
Here's to love
([ND:] Here's to us)

[Rachel:]
Wish everybody well

[Rachel with New Directions:]
Here's to us
Here's to love
Here's to us

[Rachel:]
Here's to us

A person, A paper, A promise

Once on a yellow piece of paper with green lines
he wrote a poem
And he called it "Chops"
because that was the name of his dog
And that's what it was all about
And his teacher gave him an A
and a gold star
And his mother hung it on the kitchen door
and read it to his aunts
That was the year Father Tracy
took all the kids to the zoo
And he let them sing on the bus
And his little sister was born
with tiny toenails and no hair
And his mother and father kissed a lot
And the girl around the corner sent him a
Valentine signed with a row of X's
and he had to ask his father what the X's meant
And his father always tucked him in bed at night
And was always there to do it
Once on a piece of white paper with blue lines
he wrote a poem
And he called it "Autumn"
because that was the name of the season
And that's what it was all about
And his teacher gave him an A
and asked him to write more clearly
And his mother never hung it on the kitchen door
because of its new paint
And the kids told him
that Father Tracy smoked cigars
And left butts on the pews
And sometimes they would burn holes
That was the year his sister got glasses
with thick lenses and black frames
And the girl around the corner laughed
when he asked her to go see Santa Claus
And the kids told him why
his mother and father kissed a lot
And his father never tucked him in bed at night
And his father got mad
when he cried for him to do it.
Once on a paper torn from his notebook
he wrote a poem
And he called it "Innocence: A Question"
because that was the question about his girl
And that's what it was all about
And his professor gave him an A
and a strange steady look
And his mother never hung it on the kitchen door
because he never showed her
That was the year that Father Tracy died
And he forgot how the end
of the Apostle's Creed went
And he caught his sister
making out on the back porch
And his mother and father never kissed
or even talked
And the girl around the corner
wore too much make up
That made him cough when he kissed her
but he kissed her anyway
because that was the thing to do
And at three a.m. he tucked himself into bed
his father snoring soundly
That's why on the back of a brown paper bag
he tried another poem
And he called it "Absolutely Nothing"
Because that's what it was really all about
And he gave himself an A
and a slash on each damned wrist
And he hung it on the bathroom door
because this time he didn't think
he could reach the kitchen.
